Knockoff Chia Smash Jam

Here’s my new recipe for knockoff chia smash jam in two flavors: Blueberry and cherry! Enjoy!

I have MCAS and I try to avoid refined sugar. I found Chia Smash Jam at my local food co-op, and it has been my favorite yogurt topping! But it’s expensive and I go through a little jar quickly. So I decided to make my version at home to save money, and it is delicious!

What is MCAS?

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a chronic condition that affects all organ systems. It can cause severe, disabling symptoms every day, including potentially fatal anaphylaxis. MCAS often occurs with other chronic conditions like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Managing MCAS is challenging because many healthcare providers are unaware of it, and diagnostic tests can be unreliable. Treatments involve using antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, and avoiding triggers. Check out this post on how to manage MCAS.

Why this recipe?

This recipe is lower in carbs and fiber, while also being lower in histamine and histamine-releasing foods, lower in oxalates, and free of refined sugar and gluten. Eating a diet lower in carbs and inflammatory foods can help to control histamine intolerance. To learn more about the lower histamine diet click here!

The bucket theory

The bucket theory simplifies understanding symptom reactions with MCAS. Imagine your body as an empty bucket you don’t want to overflow. Reactions to various stimuli fill the histamine bucket at different rates, forming the total histamine level (how full your bucket is). More histamine means more symptoms. By managing triggers, reducing exposures, and taking medications and supplements, you can control your bucket’s level.

Know your typical symptom progression

Knowing your symptom progression in a symptom flare is the key to developing your rescue planThis post discusses how to recognize your symptom progression so you can be prepared to address those symptoms.

  • 6 cups frozen blueberries or pitted cherries
  • 4 Medjool dates pitted

Instructions

  • Place the dates, lemon juice, and fruit into a two-quart stainless steel saucepan over low heat. Stir it every few minutes as the fruit thaws and gradually releases its juice.
  • Continue cooking over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is warm and soupy.
  • Carefully pour the mixture into a high-speed blender and process for about a minute until smooth. Return the mixture to the saucepan over low heat.
  • Add the chia seeds and continue to cook over low heat for 10-15 minutes, until it begins to thicken. Remove from the heat.
  • Sterilize a mason jar and pour the mixture into it. Cap and refrigerate until cool. Serve over yogurt, on sandwiches, or with ice cream.
